Welcome to Tarbox Cold Front,
the works of Mystic, Connecticut's Mat Austin Tarbox.
Around 1995, I teamed up with friends Shawn Fake (drums) and Talbot Pray (guitar) to start the band Cigarette, playing live shows at various bars and clubs in Southeastern Connecticut.
We wrote about eight songs, and recorded only a couple, including "Morpheus Way" which I've found and uploaded from an old dusty tape in my basement. We played and mixed the song on a 4-track cassette recorder in a single afternoon. Enjoy these 1990s vibes!
To start things off as I launch this site in March 2026, I've posted "Cleopatra" --- I wrote this back in 1992 with a keyboard, guitar, a drum mic, and a 4-track cassette recorder. I learned that once you record and mix a guitar take that is too harsh, there is just no saving it. It was a fantastic lesson, but this 1992 mix is definitely a bit rough -
The rest of the songs on that 'Skeletons' cassette were written later around 1995 on a Peavey keyboard sequencer as frameworks for a future Delta of Venus LP that never happened for a variety of reasons.
I hope you get a kick out of these instrumentals, if just to see one way a band's writing process can start off - in Delta of Venus, typically the sequenced bits would eventually have been pared back a bit as real drums, guitar, and vocals were added at band rehearsals.
Thanks for visiting - I will be posting more music soon, so please check back at some point -
